Vasco Da Gama  (click title for download page)

The activity “Vasco Da Gama” was developed using the Learning Magic Text and Graphics Click to Read TGCR template. In this template, the child is presented with a graphic and a text box with one to three paragraphs of information regarding the subject, and that page is then followed by a page with a multiple choice question to ascertain the student’s comprehension of the previously read materials. From the onset in 1497 to the completion of the trip in 1499 Vasco and his crew faced great difficulties both in navigation and in establishing trade arrangements in the Muslim-based trade centers.

The journey across the Atlantic is recounted in the activity, and it provides not only pictures of the trip but also diagrams of the ship and maps of the routes that the ship(s) travelled. Conditions as they existed aboard the Mayflawer are described and the travails of the crossing are also retold.

In this activity we recount the exploits of Jean Lafitte, a well-known pirate who first attacked Spanish merchant ships in the Caribbean. He subsequently moved to Louisiana and ran a smuggling and piracy ring in New Orleans. However, he also became a hero by helping Colonel Andrew Jackson fight the British at the Battle of New Orleans, where he provided arms, ammunition and men to help defeat the British army.

Blackbeard the Pirate  (click title for download page)

This activity is written in Learning Magic’s Text and Graphics Click to Read template. In this template, the child is presented with a graphic and a text box with one to three paragraphs of information regarding the subject, and that page is then followed by a page with a multiple choice question to ascertain the student’s comprehension of the previously read materials. The activity recounts the life of Edward Teach, aka “Blackbeard”, one of the most notorious pirates of all, who preyed upon merchant ships in both the Caribbean and along the southeastern shorelines of the United States in the early 1700s.

Vehicle Addition to 6  (click title for download page)

ehicle Addition to 6 is based upon the NEW Learning Magic addition template which not only tracks the correct number of objects in the counting boxes but also checks to make sure that the objects in the counting boxes are the correct objects based upon the text box scenario. In this example, the text states that four jeeps and two corvettes are available for sale at an audition. The child first is instructed to place four jeeps in the left counting box, then two corvettes in the middle counting box. After that they are to place the total number of vehicles in the right-most counting box using the correct objects and finally to write the equation below.
