What Is An Insect?

This activity was developed in IntelliPics Studio 3® and was designed for children in the fourth and fifth grade. It has lots of reading in context and is inclusive of discussions regarding phylum, classes, orders, and species.

We review the physical characteristics of beetles, butterflies, crane flies including discussions on exoskeletons and compare insects to a tarantula and other arachnids.

The activity also includes discussion and illustrations on full metamorphosis life cycles as well as simple life cycles, i.e. comparing and contrasting various insects.

The activity utilizes diagrams, hyperlinks to outside websites, photographs and IntelliMations to demonstrate insect movement.

Application needed: IntelliPics Studio 3, Classroom Suite, or Classroom Suite Player.
Curriculum area: Science.
Level: Grades 3-5.
