Musical Instruments

Given the cut back on musical programs in lots of schools, we thought we would provide children with a picture and a short video of six instruments and let them research and write, potentially about the various instruments, their origins, the way they are played (bow, fingers, hammers/mallets etc) and the various sounds they make.

The activity is developed in the IntelliPics Studio 3® Easy Storybook template. The instruments available include the banjo and fiddle together on one page, followed by the hammer dulcimer, the harp, the steel pan and finally the marimba.

In showing these to children, we find that they are intrigued by the many musical forms and sounds that are created by the various instruments. In our experience when children are asked to compare, as an example the hammer dulcimer, the steel pan and the marimba which are all played by hammers/mallets, it raises lots of interesting comments and observations on the part of the children.

The activity provides the child with the opportunity to write about their visual and auditory observations and in other cases what they have learned about the instrument and its origins and roots.

The underlying technology used in this activity is IntelliPics Studio 3®. The activity can be run on the IntelliTools Classroom Suite Player but IntelliPics Studio 3® will be required to make changes or additions to the activity.

Applications needed: IntelliTools Classroom Suite®, IntelliTools Classroom Suite Player®, or IntelliPics Studio 3®.
